The Stockwell Bus Garage in South London
A stunning example of post war modernist architecture, this understated building was one of my recent discoveries in South London.
The roof structure is supported by ten “two-hinged” arched ribs which make up the distinctive shape of the structure. The cantilevered barrel vaults have skylights running the full width of the garage which together with windows and wide entrances bathes the interior with natural light.
In this illustration I wanted to emphasise the beautiful roof of the garage, which is so unique and quite unexpected, for a humble bus garage.
